The 1996–97 FA Premier League season was the fifth season of the competition, since its formation in 1992. The majority of the season was contested by the reigning champions, Manchester United, along with Newcastle United, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Emre is a midfielder for FA Premier League club Newcastle United and Turkey. Belozoglu was developed by Turkish club Galatasaray, and made his first appearance for the club's senior squad as a 16-year-old in the 1996-97 season. Emre was named by Pele as one of the top 125 greatest living footballers in March 2004.
